Starmere for schoolsProgramme goals
The emphasis develops as the learner moves through the curriculum. Placement helps establish where to begin; age alone does not choose the level.
Build from sounds and early reading towards fluency, comprehension and thoughtful interpretation.
Develop clear written expression, then explore creative, descriptive, analytical and persuasive work.
Ask questions, connect ideas and develop the reasoning behind a response.
Bring vocabulary, understanding and expression into purposeful communication.
The curriculum
Each stage groups three levels. Explore the route below, then open a level to see its curriculum and books.
Stage 1 · Levels 1 to 3
Begin with phonics readiness, connect sounds and letters, and grow towards early reading.
Stage 2 · Levels 4 to 6
Progress through independent, confident and proficient reading, building understanding alongside fluency.
Stage 3 · Levels 7 to 9
Develop curiosity, express ideas in writing and examine what a text means.
Stage 4 · Levels 10 to 12
Explore creative, descriptive and analytical writing, choosing language to communicate ideas clearly.
Stage 5 · Levels 13 to 15
Develop persuasive and research writing, bringing reading, reasoning and expression together.
How the structure works
Learners work through a manageable group of books, with Checks that help guide the next step.
The current Learning Pack brings together four assigned books. Practice and a learning check help you see what your child has understood.
Levels 1-14 each contain 36 books. Level 15 has eight books in two cycles. Teaching and Checks establish whether the learner is ready to continue.
Each stage brings together a broader set of skills. The Learner Passport keeps the history as the journey develops.
Your child's learning plan shows which books to use next. Browse the curriculum to see the skills ahead.

The later stages extend into writing, research and communication. Learners build on what they can already do, with progress supported by evidence.
